Subject Description

In Geography, students carry out first-hand investigations of te taiao | environment and the human activity within it. To do this, students go on a field trip to study local river and earthquake processes, as well as draw upon multiple viewpoints, including te ao Māori perspectives. Students particularly focus on the role of data to help develop understanding of natural and cultural environments.
Students learn to think spatially by using maps, visual images, inquiry processes, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to obtain, analyse, and present information. Through geographic thinking students develop understandings of Tropical Cyclones, Biomes and population related to patterns, processes, interactions, change, perspectives and sustainability.
As a bridge between the sciences and humanities, Geography offers ākonga the opportunity to learn and develop a range of skills and knowledge which they can apply in their everyday lives.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
There will be a one day field trip to the Hutt Valley in Term 2 to study river and earthquake phenomena. A voluntary contribution to transport costs will be approximately $20.
