Māori Performing Arts (Y10)

Subject Description

Kapa Haka continues to thrive in Aotearoa, but is not as wide spread or widely practised as it once was.  With the revival of traditional Maori Performing Arts, Mahi-ā-Rehia and the Contemporary Performing Dance Competitions both assist in the restoration of Te Reo Mäori me ōna Tikanga.  Both styles of performance come under the art of Te Whare Tapere.

  This is a mixed course of study for Year 9 to Year 13. It is assessed according to NZQA Unit Standards that will contribute to NCEA certification. 

Students are required to demonstrate practical skills as well as maintain an ordered record of notes and information that will be evidence of knowledge.  Students are required to complete and submit written research assignments as well.



Recommended Prior Learning

Prior knowledge and experience in haka and Māori Performing Arts advantageous but not required



Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

There are no immediate costs for the course, however damage to equipment provided such as Tii Rakau, Taiaha, Koikoi, Tititorea etc may be charged in the event of careless or reckless use of such equipment. There are no class trips planned for this course however in the event of a trip taking place a fee may be charged.
