Māori Performing Arts (Y11-13)

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Jason Va'a.

In Māori Performing Arts this year students will be working towards achieving NZQA Unit Standards Level 2, Level 3 Maori Performing Arts, Level 1 to 3 Mau Rakau.  When a Unit Standard is passed credits are awarded that will contribute to the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) certificate.  

The whole course is internally assessed.  There is no external assessment for this course.  All Unit Standards are summative assessments.  There is limited opportunity for further assessment, this is subject to Teacher’s discretion.

Students are required to demonstrate practical skills as well as maintain an ordered record of notes and information that will be evidence of knowledge.  Students are required to complete and submit written research assignments as well. 

All performances will be video recorded and all written assignments will be stored as evidence and submitted to NZQA for External Moderation. 



Recommended Prior Learning

Prior knowledge and experience in haka and Māori Performing Arts advantageous but not required



Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

There are no immediate costs for the course, however damage to equipment provided such as Tii Rakau, Taiaha, Koikoi, Tititorea etc may be charged in the event of careless or reckless use of such equipment. There are no class trips planned for this course however in the event of a trip taking place a fee may be charged.

Assessment Information

All Unit Standard assessments will be issued to you two weeks in advance. There are two parts to every assessment. Both must be completed in order to be awarded the credit weighting of each Unit Standard. All assessments must be completed by the set date as there is limited further assessment opportunity.

These are: 1. The performance of the items

A submitted written report of the explanation of items, history, variation of tribal movements and names, background information of the songs, and categories within each Unit Standard.

All performances will be video recorded and all written assignments will be stored as evidence and submitted to NZQA for External Moderation.
