History (Y12)
Subject Description
Students will examine a range of case studies related to the search for peace in the nuclear age and the shaping of the geo-political world post WW2 continuing up to 9/11 and the “War on Terror”. This includes a broad survey of events of the cold war, the formation of the UN, post-colonialism, and emerging independence movements. There is a focus on "how the past affects the present" with an examination of how past events that have ongoing impacts and have shaped the modern world. Students will examine Aotearoa’s anti-nuclear movement and our contribution to international peace-keeping as well as NZ’s emerging identity in the 1960s,70s,80s. The course will develop students' critical thinking, source analysis and formal writing skills and there will be options for students to follow their interests with self-selected case study inquiries.
Recommended Prior Learning
There is open entry to Y12 History. While it can be helpful to have Level 1 history or geography as a basis, this is not required.
