Science (Y10)
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Michael Bangma.
Welcome to Y10 Science at Onslow College!
Year 10 Science will build upon concepts from last year while looking into new and exciting contexts. The concepts in year 10 are less directly observable and so new ideas must be constructed from observations and conclusions.
Topic | Big Ideas | Weeks | Assessment | Curriculum Overlap |
Reactions and Patterns in Chemistry | Investigating the properties and reactions of simple substances to identify patterns, including metals and non-metals, acids and bases. Using chemical language to describe reactions – basic formulae and simple word equations. | 10 | Test |
|
Sports Physiology | Investigating how the circulatory and gas exchange systems work together in animals like ourselves. We’ll also explore how our skeletons and muscles allow movement and balance. | 6
| Annotate parts of the human body and show how different systems work together. | PE / Health in Term 2 |
Engineering and Models | Explore the physics ideas behind some simple machines and structures. You will build and test scale models like engineers. | 6
| Testing and investigating models |
|
Human Reproduction and Genetics | An introduction to the way that human life reproduces and passes on genetic information. Why you are the way that you are. | 6 | Make a booklet to explain a genetic disease to a young adult and parent | |
Electricity | A playful introduction to static electricity, building circuits and magnetism. Followed on by how electricity and magnets can work together to make speakers, motors, etc… | 4 |
