Rumaki Tuakana (Y11-13)
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Tāpine Simmons, Jason Va'a.
Tuakana Te Reo Māori represents the pinnacle of Te Reo Māori learning, designed for students who have completed a Te Reo Māori Level 2 (L2) or a Te Reo Māori Level 3 (L3) programme. These students should be advances or deeply immersed in the language. This course is ideal for those with a very high level of understanding in both spoken and written Te Reo Māori. In Tuakana, students will thrive as they engage with advanced language structures, explore complex cultural concepts, and refine their fluency. This subject is perfect for those ready to challenge themselves and further solidify their mastery of Te Reo Māori at the highest level.
Subject Overview
Term 1
At Te Reo Māori Level 3 (L3), the students will be working towards pieces of text and including listening activities. A listening activity will be assessed towards the end of the term. In Te Reo Rangatira Level 1 (L1) we will be looking at translating piece of text so that will enable our students to be able to deeply connect to the piece of text.
Term 2
In Level 3 Te Reo Māori (L3), students will engage with a variety of contexts to strengthen their language skills, with a particular focus on the speaking component. This course encourages active use of Te Reo Māori through discussions and oral presentations. In Te Reo Rangatira, students will delve into different pieces of text, analyzing and interpreting them to build their understanding. This exploration will naturally lead to the creation of their own written pieces, where they can express their ideas and insights in Te Reo Māori.
Term 3
In Level 3 Te Reo Māori (L3), students will focus on deepening their understanding of the language through context-driven learning, particularly emphasizing reading and comprehension. They'll work with various texts to enhance their ability to interpret and analyze content in Te Reo Māori. The course also includes a strong Te Reo Rangatira component, where students will explore different pieces of text that will guide them towards crafting their own stories. This combination of reading, comprehension, and creative writing will help students refine their language skills and express themselves more fluently in Te Reo Māori.
Term 4
In Level 3 Te Reo Māori (L3), students will engage in significant school testing to prepare for the reading and comprehension external assessment this term. These tests will focus on interpreting and analyzing various texts in Te Reo Māori, ensuring that students are well-equipped for the challenges of the external exam. Through these assessments, students will refine their reading skills and deepen their understanding of the language, setting a solid foundation for success.
Recommended Prior Learning
Before selecting Tuākana Te Reo Māori, students should have a strong and comprehensive background in Te Reo Māori, as the course is conducted primarily in an immersive Te Reo Māori environment. Unlike courses that balance English and Māori, Tuākana expects students to engage with the language almost exclusively in Māori. Students should be confident in their ability to understand and communicate complex ideas, both in spoken and written Te Reo Māori. This prior learning is essential for success, as the course demands a high level of fluency and cultural understanding.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
It is recommended that students have either a working device or a 1B5 Exercise book. It is more essential to have a working device as the majority of the work will be delivered both online and offline.
Pathway
This subject leads towards Te Reo Rangatira and then towards further education at University or tertiary learning as well.
