Geography - Sustainable Futures (Y13)
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Mike Taylor.
Geographic thinking develops understandings related to patterns, processes, interactions, change, and sustainability. We ask the fundamental question “What Is Where, Why There, and Why Care?” In a world where human activity is having a significant impact on the planet’s climate and ecosystems, this Year 13 course is themed about issues of local and global sustainability: event management of a music festival, researching aspects of urban livability, exploring plastic pollution of our oceans, and examining interacting natural and cultural processes.
Geographic thinking helps ākonga to participate in the world as critical, empathetic, informed, and responsible people. It considers where features of te taiao are, how they interconnect, and how they can change over time. In Geography, ākonga nurture kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga by considering the impact their actions, and the actions of others, can have within te taiao. To do this, ākonga draw from multiple perspectives, including te ao Māori and Pacific perspectives.
Recommended Prior Learning
There is open entry to Y13 Geography. While it can be helpful to have Level 2 geography, history or classics as a basis, they are not required.
